The Conversation Hour for Nurses is a program facilitated by a physician, a clinical psychologist and a medical humanist. Nurses find themselves in a complex and challenging position. In caring for the patient, nurses are at the crossroads between patient and doctor. Nurses provide the direct care to the patient through clinical, technological and emotional supports. At times, they experience demands from several of the doctors involved in a patient’s care, from the institution, from the patient and also from the patient’s family.
The Conversation Hour provides an opportunity for nurses to examine their difficult position at the crossroads in healthcare delivery and explore constructive means of resolving the dilemmas they face. The selected literature helps nurses to listen more discerningly to the patient, the family and doctor; heightens personal awareness and the habit of self-scrutiny; and enables nurses to think both critically and empathetically about moral issues and dilemmas in medicine. The Conversation Hour distinguishes the nurse’s voice and dynamic role in healthcare. |
