The workshops are based upon films produced by the Center for Communication in Medicine that underscore what patients, families and medical practitioners identify as critical themes in living with and adjusting to chronic and life threatening illness. The doctor and nurse face the difficult task of reconciling a patient to illness and, in some instances, their impending death. The greatest challenge is to craft a relationship that allows for effective communication during times of stress and uncertainty.

The medical encounter is mediated by communication. Patients hear but do not often comprehend what doctors say about diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.  The language of medicine and the language of the patient’s lived experience of illness are not the same. The language differences can impede communication.  Through a series of didactic and interactive discussions led by experienced faculty, participants reflect on their own communication practices.  Particular attention is directed towards bridging the language differences and improving communication in decision-making.

Note: The workshops provide intensive training opportunities with experienced faculty. The educational films/study guides can also be purchased directly from CCM. Continuing Medical Education credits are available.
